Re: Bat Texan Jim Lee-style Cowl Sculpt UPDATED PG 6

Well, the fiberglass mother-mold is done, I'm just having trouble getting it off the silicone. I'm having to work it slowly so I don't damage either the fiberglass or the silicone---finally got the back half off today! The keys (the pink nipples) which will help lock the silicone mold into the mother-mold are making it difficult to separate the two. Next time, better placement of the keys should help with that.

Once I get them off the sculpt, then I'll make the urethane foam-filled master, then I can use that to cast the ultracal mold---then it's latex time!

I'm guessing another 2-3 weeks before I get my first pull. So be patient guys---believe me, I can't wait to see a finished cowl! :batman

Well, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is I finally got the front half of the fiberglass off, and it doesn't look like the silicone is in too bad of a shape. It fits back into the mother-mold well, and the keys help hold it in place like they're supposed to!

The bad news is I wrecked the hell out of the sculpt getting it off! The silicone really held onto the clay from chin to brow, pulling the clay off the armature. I'd planned to rework the sculpt for big-head guys, but that's now a much longer way off now---this sculpt's gonna need some serious work before it's usable again.

I still have to clean up the silicone, and patch any damage I did to it that could affect the urethane foam-filled master, but at least I know I'm still on track with this sucker!

Geez Tom, I go away from the board for a few months, come back to browse through the new threads, and there you are, cowling up another storm. Can't wait to see the finished product, your stuff always comes out great.

A quick update: I've finished the urethane foam-filled master, so now I'm waiting on ultracal to come in, probably next week. I thought I'd post a couple of pix of the process.

Urethane in silicone mold:

Adding foam:

It's not totally flawless, but there's nothing wrong with it that I can't fix in the ultracal mold if I need to. This has been one hell of a learning experience, and besides the archives, my main source of info on this process (from silicone to fiberglass to urethane) has been Uncle Ed. He's been a huge help to me, answering ALL of my questions some stupid, some not.

So, here's to you Ed! :cheers

Man, that looks so good. I've said it before, this has become my favorite non-movie sculpt. I really can't wait to see a finished product. This one would look great either blue or black. Definitly on my wish list.
