Batsignal tutorial

Ok this thing is easy to make as long as you have the right tools. The parts consist of...
1. 20 gallon round utility tub. Can get it at walmart, menards, lowes or dollar general if you have one of those near you.
2. 2'x2' piece of plexiglass thickness is up to you.
3. 2'x2' piece of plywood thickness is up to you.
4. round shop light.I bought the one with a clamp on it but didnt use the clamp.
5. 6 carriage bolts with nuts whatever size you want to use.
6. foam pipe wrap enough to go around edge of tub to cover plexiglass.

Like I said this is pretty easy to make.
I started by tracing the outline of the tub onto the plexiglass and then carefully cutting it out with a jig saw.
If you put masking tape around the cutting line it will reduce the chance of cracking the plexiglass while cutting it.

I then marked where i was going to drill the holes to bolt the plexiglass to the tub.
Do not mount plexiglass to the tub until later.

Now making the template for the bat was easy for me cause I have an overhead projector so i just printed out the one I liked and projected it on the wall til I got the size I wanted.
Once I got my template I traced it onto the plywood and cut it out with my jig saw. I then marked where I was going to drill the holes to bolt the bat to the plexiglass.

Paint the bat before mounting to plexiglass.
Then take the shield off of the shop light and trace a hole at the bottom of the tub cut it out then install the light into the tub put the shield onto the light fixture then insert bulb.
Now that you have the light installed you can bolt the plexiglass to the tub then glue the foam pipe wrap around the tub's edge. Here are a few pics of the signal when completed.

not that great gotta get close to the wall I think I will put some spacers between the plexiglass and the bat like the TDK bat signal to see if that helps.

Looks great. I've been mulling over a project like this for years, just haven't gotten around to it. I even had an old projection TV (not rear projection, the kind that gets projected on a wall or screen) lense here (I might have finally tossed it last year, I have to check) for the project. You "might" try using a brighter light, perhaps a halogen, to get it to shine better on the wall. There are some REAL powerful flashlights and work lights out there that might work.
Again, not to put down what you have in any way. It looks fantastic. :up :up :up

I thought about using a halogen light but I was worried that it would get too hot and melt the tub emoticon

reflective surface on the inside of the tub, man....lay down some aluminum foil or something of the like....will push more light out, yes?
