A way to thin a urethane cowl that is a little too thick.

Hey bros. Quick question. Is there a way to thin the top of a urethane cowl from the inside that is a little too heavy and thick? I was thinking about sand paper and a lot of elbow grease, but I'm not sure of that's the best way to go. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Never had to do it myself, but I've heard a dremel tool suggested in the past for easier-to-reach areas like the neck. The head would be a tight squeeze for your hand and the tool, though...

What kind of cowl is it?

Any other suggestions you crazy kids??

If you can fold the cowl inside out (or at least get that part of the cowl through the neck opening) and use a belt sander with a 60 grit belt on it, that'll do it.

I have a belt sander that can be placed upside down on a work table, rather than one with a handle on the top...

I've done it before and it works good.

Thanks guys! I will give it a shot. It's a TDK cowl. I'll post pics when done.

some thoughts:
grinding rubber works best if the urethane is around a 60 shore or higher. If you use a dremel do so only on slowest speed, because you will probaly melt the rubber, or at least partially. One other danger of using a dremel is that the dia. is so small and the rpm's are so fast, that you can grind a hole in the rubber in a blink of an eye, if you're not careful. A sanding belt would be great if you can get it to fit inside, and keep good control over it. One slip, and the sanding belt, or dremel will carve a nice groove in some area that you might not want.
I might suggest a 1" sanding drum on the end of a variable speed hand drill. This will take longer, but may be safer in terms of accidentally grinding too much. Just go slow and be careful.
Another thing is the rubber "dust". WEAR a respirator, and also sprinkle some baby powder inside before. Baby powder will collect the rubber dust before it goes anywhere, and keep the awefull smell of melting rubber down. again, if it's less than 60 shore, it can grab the sandpaper, and pull the tool in a direction you may not want. i.e. the closer to plastic the rubber is, the better. be careful and go S L O W.
Baby powder is your friend on any kind of rubber.

Thanks guys! I will definitely give your suggestions a try. It looks like we have the same cowl yamaha. Did you have to thin the top as well, or just the nose area?
