Neon's First Cowl Sculpt: Update on Page 9!
Go to Page 8 for the newest pics and help me decide which ear stays!
__________
Currently working on my first cowl sculpt... I've started and restarted this thing a half-dozen times, but I've finally got a look I'm digging.
Please excuse the terrible pics (not helped by my wonky angles) as my good camera doesn't seem to hold a charge anymore.
Now obviously Bats has got some symmetry issues, but right now I'm just trying to nail down the specifics of size and curvature before mirroring. Once the forms are down, I plan on adding a leathery texture and sculpted seams along with a matte finish to simulate a leather cowl despite the fact that it's going to be cast in latex.
Any and all critiques and constructive criticism welcome, we only learn from our mistakes!
The mouth opening narrows significantly underneath the chin so that the final mask will help produce more of an imposing jawline instead of relying on the wearer's.
The two ears come down to a point on the back of the head, with the inside edge sculpted concave to be more reminiscent of bat ears.
Skull-like cheeks for badassitude.
The demonic ears on top of the wearer's ears are to suggest that underneath the mask he's still a creature of the night.
I still see a lot of problems before I even get to mirroring, so feel free to point anything out. Thanks for the inspiration, guys!

Re: Neon's First Cowl Sculpt: Critiques Wanted!
Eyebrows are reminiscent of the sculpt furst used for the Rubies grey foam Batsuit. VERY cool scowl so far. The cheeck cut-ins are reminiscent of the '89 Joker prosthetic, and the ear on the side looks good chiseled like that. I like the cowl ears' length and angularity, but I dunno about the "scooped" look- it's not my style but so far lookin' good! Keep your hands on that clay and it'll refine quick. Good work my friend!

Re: Neon's First Cowl Sculpt: Critiques Wanted!
Damn, now all I see is Batman with a gigantic grin. :lol
Thanks for the words, the bat ears are something I haven't really touched since I made the basic forms except for smoothing and blending into the head. I'll probably end up thickening them up a bit to be more congruent with the rest of the cowl's design, which'll decrease the inner "scoop"... I think that the concave thing makes it look a bit too cat-like as-is.

Re: Neon's First Cowl Sculpt: Critiques Wanted!
I like it. Love the brow area and the ears are gonna make a really cool demonic bat.
Dont scrap this one, its THE one.
Id keep the mouth opening too, yeah kinda looks joker-ish but not enough to get rid of it.
Youre on the right track, stay with the design. All you have to do is finish the ears "both sets :lol ) line things up and smooth it out.
I want one :)

Re: Neon's First Cowl Sculpt: Critiques Wanted!
I too was thinking the same in terms of the mouth and eyebrows.....Even before i read everyone else's posts all i kept seeing was Nicholson's joker....
the eyebrows seem fine to me but i feel the mouth opening might need to be addressed...
although perhaps once a human face is inside it will look fine.

Already dealt with the opening, giving the cheeks a more angular and skeletal feel and altering the sides as well. :)

Re: Neon's First Cowl Sculpt: Critiques Wanted!
I really like where you're going with the eyes and nose. I'm anxious to see what you did with the cheekbone area, as I think I might have raised the opening around it some.
I'm not certain how you have the back of the ears, but it makes them look a touch "thick" as is. It might be just because you haven't gotten to doing a lot of finishing work to that area yet.
Either way, you're well on your way to having a nice custom cowl.:up

Very interesting look...reminds me a little of a certain canadian mutant from the marvel universe. However, I dig it. What's it look like from the back?
