Check out www.accu-cast.us or just search accu-cast. This is where I've ought all my alginate which has been inexpensive and great. They also have a really good tutorial on head casting where you only use alginate on the face. the rest of the head is done with plaster bandages. Like it has been said you only need alginate for shin detail. I was able to get a cast done with about 1-1.5 pounds of alginate pre-mixed. Take a look. It worked out really well for me.
