I've been to other places on the web where that sentiment did not ring true. Thanks for all of the great advice. Anybody ever apply latex using foam brushes? I don't have an air compressor right now and I'm guessing they are not cheap....nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ibnzbass4)Wed, 18 Aug 2010 21:14:47 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210309,from=rss#post2210309https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210309,from=rss#post2210309Quote:ChrisRobin1 wrote: Actually... the prevail sprayer your talking about has no where near the power to shoot out latex. It did fine for me when i used it to paint my latex 89 cowl (which was cast with no pigment). 4 coats tops. Thinned with ammonia. Never used it on a spandex under suit though. I imagined it would have done the trick as well. But if you said you tried and failed, well I'll take your word for it. There are spray guns made specially for latex, but its going to cost much more than that purple one. And you will need a bigger compressor. Goodluck fellas! :wink nondisclosed_email@example.com (BatNar)Wed, 18 Aug 2010 16:11:22 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210305,from=rss#post2210305https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210305,from=rss#post2210305Clear plasti dip all the way. I use a pancake air compressor 150 psi and use the gun at 40 psi. I would attach the armor with dap weldwood. nondisclosed_email@example.com (ChrisRobin1)Wed, 18 Aug 2010 15:45:57 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210290,from=rss#post2210290https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210290,from=rss#post2210290Regarding #2- For the armor itself, one option is to seal with Plasti-dip spray. Avoid using it on the undersuit, though. I was under the impression that latex would remain sticky forever as well, but speaking from my experience making my 89 cape over the past week or so, it will eventually cure to a non-tacky level after a while (I used the Monster Makers Black Bat latex). After rolling on the latex, I left the cape, spread out, in a hot garage. After several days of that, the folds that occur near the hem when the cape is worn no longer tended to stick to themselves. That being said, the cape folds don't have much pressure on them. For the undersuit parts only- you might still need to apply baby powder to any area on the suit which will fold/touch itself with more pressure (elbows, underarms, knees, etc). This will stop any tackiness that is left. You can clean off the powder afterwards with soapy water to get the black finish back. I would just say be sparing with the powder since it's a pain to clean off.nondisclosed_email@example.com (mooslug)Wed, 18 Aug 2010 13:38:52 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210289,from=rss#post2210289https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210289,from=rss#post2210289Oh yes, and what do you use for an air compressor?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ibnzbass4)Wed, 18 Aug 2010 13:13:09 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210281,from=rss#post2210281https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210281,from=rss#post2210281I'm going to look into getting the gun and trying that. Thanks for the advice. A follow up question or 2 if I may: 1. I was originally going to put a base coat of latex on the undersuit, then place the muscles, then spray over with 3 coats or so of latex. However, I have been considereing making Returns style armor with the craft foam, coating the undersuit and the foam separately, THEN placing the foam on the suit. Will that anchor the armor? 2. What do you use to seal the latex when finished. My understanding, (never yet worked with it) is that it will remain sticky even dry until a finish is applied.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ibnzbass4)Wed, 18 Aug 2010 12:50:35 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210260,from=rss#post2210260https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210260,from=rss#post2210260Chris, do you mean this one? Actually, if you're talking about the one I think you are, thats definietly a no no for latex paints. Only works for oil based enamels as it clearly states in the description bro. :wink There is a cheaper more disposable unit sold on amazon which uses compressed air and has a glass jug as well. If that gets clogged after full usage, you can toss it. Since brush guns are more elaborate, especially when taking it apart to clean, it can be a serious pain trying to remove any traces of latex. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Nar Comics)Tue, 17 Aug 2010 19:36:30 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210209,from=rss#post2210209https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210209,from=rss#post2210209I use the liquid latex from liquidlatex.com 32oz will do a whole suit just make sure you spray it thick and I use a gun from harborfreight.com its $15 and purple. nondisclosed_email@example.com (ChrisRobin1)Tue, 17 Aug 2010 19:05:01 +0000 Re: Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210208,from=rss#post2210208https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210208,from=rss#post2210208Good stuff. If you want to sculpt the foam easily, use green upholstery foam, then soak it in water and sand it with sandpaper while frozen to get the desired shape. You may also use a hotwire to sculpt it, but the fumes literally could kill you. Remember, latex will always show the detail of whatever is underneath, so have your base form smooth and clean before you start to latex it. Your other option is, use two layers of spandex, with your sculpted muscles in between. You'd have to be good at sewing though..... lots of work.  :cheers nondisclosed_email@example.com (Hunterbat)Mon, 16 Aug 2010 16:30:45 +0000 Liquid Latex Armorhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210095,from=rss#post2210095https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2210095,from=rss#post2210095 :batfly I'm very new to this, but have been doing some research. Is it possible to create a suit using just liquid latex and craft foam over a spandex style body suit? I read about layering latex over spandex/dive skin, placing craft foam 'muscles' over it, them 3 more layers of latex to create the core suit. Will that work? ALL advice for rookies helpful!
