Any thoughts on leather cowls.
Having had some time to go through the different threads and using the search tool I found that there weren't really too many threads on here about leather cowls. My thinking was to make a leather cowl but I was thinking about doing a hardened leather cowl with a more supple neck. From reading on how fun it is to fight the rubber cowls to get them on and off I'm wondering if I should maybe make the neck one piece with the cowl or a seperate piece that goes into the cowl and have the cowl itself as 2 pieces. The 2 piece cowl idea came from looking at the Jim Aparo black and white statue that came out.

My thinking with that is I can almost use the bat ears to hide the seams. Plus with hardened leather I could go pretty tall with the ears. I've never really done anything like this but I though it could look pretty cool for a Gotham by Gaslight look. I was thinking it might lend a bit more authenticity to the suit going with more materials that would've been used around the time period. Just putting together some ideas for the moment at least. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Any thoughts on leather cowls.
Sounds like a neat concept. Im wondering what would happen to it with all the sweating. I know when I'm wearing mine for any length of time my ears really get sore and the inside is totally wet.I think the leather would turn to that white salty color and any die used would be all over your face. Anyway...just a thought. :)

Re: Any thoughts on leather cowls.
I hadn't thought about the dye coming off on your face due to sweating...only the heat, but that shouldn't be any worse than any other cowl.
I only remember two attempts, one by Luthio(sp?) who stretched leather over a latex cowl..it looked good. the other was a professional leather mask maker. their comment after the job was done..never again. must have been a pain.
if done correctly, the seams wouldn't show. that would look bad arse.

Re: Any thoughts on leather cowls.
I have an old KMD theatrics cowl with my comic styled costume and it fits quite nicely. It breathes and you don't sweat so much in it.

Re: Any thoughts on leather cowls.
I've been wanting to for months!
I may commission a friend of mine to do a fabric cowl, Red Robin, with mirror lenses, and being able to take it off like a hood.
Good luck! :up

Re: Any thoughts on leather cowls.
Thanks for the input so far. The dye is a good thing to take into consideration. Hadn't really thought about that. I'll have to play around with maybe lining a different fabric or material of some sort into the interior of the cowl. I have a friend that does a lot of leather work for renn fair stuff. I'll have to talk to them and see what they maybe might recommend. I'll definitely have to do some test runs with different types of leather and see what happens. Just getting some early ideas right now. Probably try to start this project a little later this year if time permits. I'll definitely post pics up as I start doing this.

Re: Any thoughts on leather cowls.
You may want to look into a four way stretch pleather, if you are going to be using a shell under it. I know someone on this board made a really nice cowl using a child's baseball helmet and Rubies Begins plastic mask.
