Thanks, Bigbat! A friend at work who's also a seamstress mentioned that same thing about the shiny side. I actually might tackle the cape again some day so I can go back to my original idea of a blue interior, the difference being all cloth, no pleather. If I do suit up again, I gotta find a more comfortable cowl. I might go the cloth neck route I've seen some guys do. My nose and ears STILL hurt from putting the cowl on and off all day yesterday. It's a WONDERFUL display piece, but I'd rather be able to eat and drink while wearing it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Doh2)Tue, 01 Nov 2016 21:41:36 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343571,from=rss#post2343571https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343571,from=rss#post2343571Suit turned out great. Props to you for taking the plunge and doing the cape yourself. I looks awesome. Pleather is VERY difficult to work with. Especially if you're trying to sew the shiny side. You need a foot for machine that rolls not hop. Good news: I took 2nd Place in the costume contest at work today!! 1st went to a guy dressed as Ursula from "Little Mermaid." He really did have a great costume, but oh, well... Thanks to all the Brothers who posted tutorials here over the years. I found this site IMMENSELY helpful when doing research the past few months. Pleather is tricky to work with, but overall I'm satisfied how things turn out. I got some nice compliments on the cowl (Reevz) and the cape (me). I mostly finished the cape tonight. The first seam I made to hold my dowel rod went smooth as silk, but my second one started bunching up and jamming my sewing machine so will take some hand repairs to fill in the gaps... annoying!! The collar also came out less than stellar, but because it'll be underneath the cowl, nobody will even see it. Working with pleather is HARD. My place is too small to take proper photos, but once suited up, I'll be able to spread the cape in a pretty impressive manner. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Doh2)Tue, 25 Oct 2016 02:55:44 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343476,from=rss#post2343476https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343476,from=rss#post2343476Looking good bro!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bigbat23)Sun, 23 Oct 2016 05:15:36 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343474,from=rss#post2343474https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343474,from=rss#post2343474Forgot to add that the glue is strong but FLEXIBLE, therefor ideal to attach patches or emblems to textile.About the cape: I only work on the design and pattern, the sewing is done by a professional, using industrial machines.Thank you for the positive comment!  :cheers nondisclosed_email@example.com (Phantombatman)Sun, 23 Oct 2016 03:20:45 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343473,from=rss#post2343473https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343473,from=rss#post2343473Thanks for the tips, Phantom! For my capes I go with the velcro, you may have to sew it strong enough, please check the photos. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Phantombatman)Sun, 23 Oct 2016 00:16:52 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343471,from=rss#post2343471https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343471,from=rss#post2343471Cape is mostly finished! However, I want to add a collar, then sew on hook and eye fasteners. Would pleather be strong enough, or should I use fabric instead? Also, any suggestions on gluing the logo onto the chest? Logo will be backed pleather, shirt is lycra blend. Thanks, Brothers. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Doh2)Sat, 22 Oct 2016 18:11:35 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343397,from=rss#post2343397https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343397,from=rss#post2343397Well, I picked up my pleather tonight and brothers is it HEAVY! I think I talked myself out of the blue lining. The fabric weighs enough as it is; I can't imagine trying to walk around with nearly twice the weight tugging at my neck. The fabric I bought appears to be quite fray-resistant, so I don't think I'll have to worry about hemming it. However, I do want to attach dowel-rods so will at least add hems to the sides. Now I just have to figure out how to close the neck after attaching a collar: Snaps? Hooks? Velcro??nondisclosed_email@example.com (Doh2)Thu, 13 Oct 2016 00:56:34 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343368,from=rss#post2343368https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343368,from=rss#post2343368Garments dyed! I'm going for an older comic book look so went with this chest logo: I cut it out of pleather and was going to sew it to the chest. But now I think I'll just use fabric glue or some sort of spray adhesive. Suggestions? I also picked up a 2" tactical belt and some ammo pouches. For the main ones, I'm using camera bags: Need to remove the remaining logos, then paint it yellow. Gonna try acrylic and see if it sticks. For the cape, I've decided to go the 6-panel route but double up on the scallops for, again, a more classic look. Wish me luck! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Doh2)Mon, 10 Oct 2016 03:20:38 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343313,from=rss#post2343313https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343313,from=rss#post2343313I like that plexiglass tip, Steve! Any tips on affixing it to the belt? And yeah, I'm going with the black trunks. I bought a compression suit, but the top is far too tight for my gut so I picked up a long-sleeved T-shirt instead. Also, I wanted a baggier look to match the Darwyn Cooke comic version. Tomorrow night, I'll be dying garments and will post results here in a couple of days. Third on the black trunks, I would only do blue if your going to do more like a Neal Adams Batsuit. I finished the gloves by cutting out some fins in cardboard, then sewing them into some pleather. I then cut the Rubies down to make them more form-fitting. My sewing skills aren't great (this the first project I've attempted) and the large fin on the left glove sorta got away from me, but I like these much better than the before version. I then put together a concept cape to combine a blue cloth interior with black pleather exterior. This will be a challenge but I'm determined to see it through. The thing I'm having the biggest issue with is finding a belt buckle large enough for a 2" belt. Even the biggest cowboy belts I'm finding stop at a 1.5" belt-size. Ideally, I'd love to pick up a 2" tactical belt so I can paint it and my camera pouches yellow. For the buckle, I'm hoping to find a large, flat one so I can affix the same bat emblem that will be on my chest (still mulling that one over). Any suggestions as to were to find a big buckle? Thanks...nondisclosed_email@example.com (Doh2)Mon, 03 Oct 2016 02:10:36 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343148,from=rss#post2343148https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343148,from=rss#post2343148I agree about the black trunks -- thanks, Uncle Ed! I just ordered some Fruit of the Loom trunks that I'll have to dye black, and an Eastbay compression suit I'll be dying a light gray. Their stock gray looked too dark. Right now, I'm researching belt buckles. There are some nice ones with the Bat logo -- but they appear to be too small. I want at least a 2" belt so am perusing Amazon for some larger buckles. I might even go with a round one for that old school Bob Kane look. I'll post more photos when I get more stuff. I bought the Gotham boots already, and have some Rubie's gloves I need to alter to make look less pirate-like: I'll be ditching those fins for more comic book-like ones. I have a LOT of sewing practice to get in before Halloween! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Doh2)Wed, 21 Sep 2016 01:17:50 +0000 Re: Comic book Batman for Halloweenhttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343141,from=rss#post2343141https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2343141,from=rss#post2343141Great concept. Brothers: I'm putting together a comic book Bat for Halloween. My main inspiration is Darwyn Cooke's version with the baggier top and longer trunks: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o00bX9k_Bns/UgKO1Xj33gI/AAAAAAAAGrI/5YwEhic8hpg/s1600/9-Darwyn-Cooke-bendy.JPG However, I much prefer longer ears on my cowl so earlier this year I bought the Arkham from Shawn Reevz. Beautiful work he does: I'm also a fan of Batman Animated so plan on making a black cape with blue interior. AND I was contemplating blue trunks to match. But maybe that's going too far. Here are my concept drawings: Thoughts? This place is a wealth of information so thanks to all who post here. I plan on sticking around for quite awhile...
